Blaque / On Women: Narratives By and About African American Women
Welcome to On Women!
This web site dedicated to the history and writings by and about
African women throughout the Disapora. This site contains various
links to other sites, essays, poetry, literature, and commentary about
the lives of African women. It celebrates the lives and history
of Black women who write, act, and speak against Western stereotypes of
who they are, where they have been, and the history they have made.
The background of this pages is a collague of powerful African women
whose lives have made history, internationally, nationally, and
regionally, such as Lola McCracken, a first generation Black Indian
woman from South Carolina; Octavia Butler, the first well-known African
American woman to write science fiction with a social purpose; Lorraine
Hansberry, who wrote one of the most famous plays canonized in Black
Drama, A Raisen in the Sun; Toni Morrison and Alice Walker, who penned prize winning American novels on the Black Female Experience (Beloved and The Color Purple); Clara
Virginia Carter, known for her philanthropy and familial dedication;
Maria Stewart, Angela Davis, Ida B. Wells, and Harriet Tubman, all
activists for the civil rights of Black people during their respective
eras; Sara Bartman, Saartjie Baartman, a 19th century African women
exploited, murdered, and put on display until 2001 because of the shape
of her physicality; and Annie Heitt, a woman known for her strong
religious beliefs, and who gave birth to over a dozen Black Indian
children in Virginia at the turn of the 20th century.
These women are but a sample of the strong African women represented on
this page. Read, learn, enjoy, and respect the lives of the
African women presented.
